China and U.S. Agree on Trade Consultation Mechanism and Tariff Rollbacks to Ease Tensions

China and the United States have taken a significant step toward de-escalating trade tensions with the announcement of a new “trade consultation mechanism” and a sweeping agreement to roll back most tariffs imposed since April. The announcement was made in a joint statement released on May 12, following two days of high-level negotiations in Geneva.

Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng described the talks as “candid, in-depth, and constructive,” underscoring both countries’ renewed commitment to resolving trade disputes through dialogue. The agreement represents the most concrete progress since the latest phase of tariff escalation began and signals a shift toward more structured engagement between the world’s two largest economies.

Key Elements of the Agreement:

    • Tariff Reductions: Both sides agreed to remove 91% of tariffs imposed since April 2, 2025, and suspend an additional 24% for a 90-day period.

    • Tariffs Maintained: A 20% tariff imposed by the U.S. under President Donald Trump since taking office in January will remain in place.

    • Effective Rates: Following the agreement, the average U.S. Tariffs on Chinese imports will decrease to 30% within the 90-day period. China will reduce its average tariff on U.S. goods to 10% over the same timeframe.

During formal talks with President Putin, Xi noted that as major global powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia share a special responsibility to maintain international peace and stability. He called on both countries to uphold a correct historical narrative of World War II, foster a multipolar world order based on equality, and support an inclusive and balanced model of globalization that benefits all nations, especially developing ones.

The visit highlights the deepening strategic partnership between China and Russia at a time of heightened geopolitical competition and shifting global alliances.

Chengfei Shares Surge on Reports of J-10C Combat Success, Despite No Direct Military Ties

On May 7, Pakistan claimed it had shot down French-made Rafale fighter jets operated by the Indian Air Force using Chinese-built J-10C aircraft. According to Reuters, at least one Rafale was reportedly brought down in what could be the first confirmed combat success for China’s J-10 fighter family since its introduction 27 years ago.

Though Chengfei Integration Technology Co. Ltd. (成飞集成, SZ002190) is not directly involved in military manufacturing, its shares surged roughly 40%, rising from CNY 17.56 to CNY 24.51 between May 5 to May 12. During the same period, trading volume reached CNY 468 million, with the firm’s total market capitalization climbing to CNY 8.69 billion.

The stock rally appears to have been fueled by investor excitement and public enthusiasm over the reported battlefield success of the J-10C, which is manufactured by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, a company associated with Chengfei’s parent firm.

Chengfei Integration mainly produces automotive stamping parts, aviation CNC components, and auto tooling—not military equipment. Still, its strong brand association with the Chengdu aerospace cluster appears to have driven speculative interest.

For Q1 2025, the company reported CNY 506 million in revenue, up 3.72% year-on-year, and net profit of CNY 484,300—an increase of 108.33%.

Despite the market excitement, Beijing has remained cautious, refraining from official comment due to the geopolitical sensitivities of the India-Pakistan conflict and broader regional security concerns.

China Proposes New Safety Standards for Hidden and Electric Car Door Handles

On May 8, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released a draft national standard detailing mandatory safety requirements for vehicle door handles, opening a public consultation period through June 7, 2025. The proposal is part of China’s broader effort to modernize automotive safety regulations, with a specific focus on the rising risks associated with hidden and powered door handle designs in modern vehicles.

While hidden and electric door handles have become increasingly popular for their sleek appearance and futuristic appeal, they’ve also raised safety concerns in real-world situations. Key risks include insufficient structural strength, vague or unintuitive operation, and reliance on electric power—which can fail in accidents or fires—making escape or rescue difficult. In emergencies, poorly labeled or hard-to-locate handles can delay response times and endanger lives.

To address these issues, the draft standard introduces a comprehensive set of technical specifications. These include:

    • Installation and labeling requirements for concealed and emergency interior handles

    • Anti-pinch safety standards and testing methods for powered exterior handles

    • Strength and durability testing protocols for both interior and exterior handles

    • Dynamic testing for powered door handle performance under real-world conditions

The proposed regulations would apply to M1-class passenger vehicles, N1-class light trucks, and multi-purpose vehicles. Other vehicle types are encouraged to adopt the standards voluntarily.

China’s current automotive safety framework emphasizes durability and environmental resistance but lacks targeted rules for new-generation handle systems. With no equivalent safety regulations yet established in global markets, this move positions China as a potential standard-setter in the evolving conversation around smart vehicle safety.

Zhao Xintong Makes History as First Chinese World Snooker Champion

Zhao Xintong etched his name into sporting history on May 5, 2025, becoming the first Chinese player to win the World Snooker Championship after defeating Welsh veteran and three-time champion Mark Williams at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

The 28-year-old’s victory marked a dramatic high point in a career that has seen both brilliance and adversity. Zhao is only the second Chinese player to reach the final of snooker’s most prestigious tournament, following Ding Junhui’s runner-up finish in 2016. But unlike his predecessor, Zhao completed the final step, securing a landmark win for Chinese snooker on the global stage.

His road to the title included a dominant semifinal performance against seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, where Zhao stormed to a 17–7 victory—including a stunning 8–0 whitewash in the second session.

The final itself was historic even before the first frame was played. At 50, Mark Williams became the oldest player to reach a World Championship final since the tournament moved to the Crucible in 1977, following an emotional semifinal win over world No. 1 Judd Trump.

“It’s been a brilliant tournament for me,” said Williams, visibly emotional after the loss. “But what a potter Zhao is. I’m glad I’ll be too old when he’s dominating the game. I’ve got nothing but admiration for what he’s done—coming through the qualifiers, after not playing for two years, and then beating everyone. There’s a new superstar of the game.”

Zhao’s historic win is expected to boost the popularity of snooker in China and marks a generational shift in the sport, heralding the rise of a new global force in cue sports.
